Solar Science at Stones River

Park rangers and volunteers will present a series of programs and family friendly activities that will let visitors explore the wonders of our solar system and learn about astronomy during the Civil War.
Enjoy a series of ongoing hands-on activities from 10 AM through 3 PM. Activities may include:

PROGRAM SCHEDULE
10 AM – What is an Eclipse? – Discover how the movements of earth, sun and moon come together to produce an eclipse and learn how to safely view and enjoy these rare and beuatiful phenomena.
11 AM – Planet Walk – Grab a planet and help us create and learn from a scale model of our solar system.
12 PM – Astronomy at War – Gen. Orsmby Mitchell played a prominent role in Murfreesboro’s Civil War story. Let a ranger share this fighting astronomer’s story with you as well as the role of astronomy and astronomical instruments in the Civil War.
