The Caves of Fall Creek Falls, and other Tennessee Caves

May 9, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Larry Matthews is a cave enthusiast and geologist. He will talk about his newest book, The Caves of Fall Creek Falls, at this presentation. He has written several books on Tennessee caves. We look forward to learning more about his expeditions plus what he has learned from spelunking about the geology of Tennessee.

Larry was born in LaFollette, Tennessee. He was raised in Nashville, Tennessee. He has always been attracted to underground places. When he was in high school the book “Caves of Tennessee” came out. It described 700 caves and where they were located. He was never the same. He and his friends became avid cave explorers.

He attended Vanderbilt University where he received both his BA and MS in Geology. In 1971, Larry’s first book, “Descriptions of Tennessee Caves”, was published by the Tennessee Division of Geology. It described an additional 300 caves that were not in Barr’s 1961 book. Larry’s book is still in print and available from the Tennessee Division of Geology in Nashville, TN. He worked as a Geologist for the Tennessee Division of Environment and Conservation until retiring in 2012.
