Officers Warn Drivers: It’s Yellow for a Reason
Williamson County Schools is joining forces with the county’s six law enforcement agencies to protect children when they are getting on and off the school bus.
On January 15, the district released a series of Public Service Announcements aimed at reducing the number of incidents involving the illegal passing of stopped school buses by motorists. The videos, which were produced by the WCS Communications Department, feature representatives from Brentwood Police, Fairview Police, Franklin Police, Nolensville Police, Spring Hill Police and the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office.
Although the U.S. Department of Transportation says children are 70 times more likely to get to school safely when they ride a school bus, the agency points to the time they are getting on or off those buses as a dangerous time for them. Nationally, five children were killed and seven people were injured near school bus stops in just three days between October 31 and November 2 of 2018.
In the spring of 2018 the State of Tennessee asked school districts to conduct a one day count of how many times vehicles passed a stopped school bus which had its stop arm out and lights flashing. In Williamson County, the district recorded 18 incidents countywide.
