Scattered storms lead to flash flooding in Franklin

Scattered storms moved through Middle Tennessee on Monday and caused flash flooding in Franklin.

Reports of the flooding started rolling in after 5:30 p.m. at the Factory at Franklin, where one woman captured a photo of a police officer helping a woman after her car became stuck in thigh-high water.

The area across from Franklin High School on Hillsboro Road also saw some mild flooding, quickly surrounding some homes.

The waters crested within inches of Jayne Choate’s garage.

“It’s pretty scary. It was really scary pulling into this. I thought the house was under water,” she told News 2.

Luckily, her home is okay, but neighbors are baffled, saying the area has never flooded before.

They point to the Hillsboro Road widening project out front for the flooding.

“This road project out here is the cause of this. So somebody is accountable for all this,” Choates said.

xContractors told News 2 they had to clear debris for water to start receding.A nearby culvert could be the culprit. It’s an important storm drain that apparently clogged up during the storm, making it so water had nowhere to go.

Neighbors worry, though, it’s only a matter of time before it happens again.

“This is really bad. This can’t happen again. What if it rained a little bit more? It would be up in the house,” Choates told News 2.

Luckily, no one was injured and no serious was damage was reported.
